Wrestlers, coaches expect tonight’s meet against Barlow to be exciting

Gresham wrestlers take on Barlow here tonight at 6 p.m. Despite having not beaten Barlow in over three years, this meet is expected to be a close one.

Last year the Gophs lost by just a few points, and this year–with much improvement as a whole–the team is looking forward to tonight’s meet.

“I think if the guys are focused enough, then it could be a close match,” junior stat girl Madison Statler said.

Since last year the team has become more close-knit, helping them to be stronger and more encouraging to each other. This has the potential to give them a slight advantage over the Bruins.

“The team has come a long way since last year,” Justin Anderson, varsity senior and team captain, said.  “As a group we are closer, making us more supportive and stronger as a whole.”

Last year’s loss was hard for the guys, but they are excited and ready to take on the opposing team this year. Barlow could be looking at an upset for their winning streak against the Gresham wrestling team.

“They ended last year pretty good. Our dual [meet against Barlow] last year came down to the last match. I think it’ll be an intense experience for the wrestlers, and the spectators who come to watch,” assistant wrestling coach Jim Gardenhire said.

Some key wrestlers that could determine the outcome of this meet are varsity wrestlers David Nelson, senior and team captain, sophomore Austun Long and freshman Patrick Anderson.

The training and effort that has been put in this year is much greater than that which was put in last year.

“Our effort level is much better than last year. Kids are more interested in getting prepared,” Gardenhire said. “Our attitude has been much more positive this year and that goes with effort.”

With all of the hard work the team has put in this year, it is still unsure whether or not it will pay off tonight. The meet will be an intense, edge-of-your-seat type of meet.

“Overall I’m really not sure what to expect tonight. Our downfall from success is consistency, so it could go either way,” Anderson said.

If all goes well, the home team will pull out a win tonight. Cheering fans in the stands can help pump up the wrestlers, so stop by and root for the Gresham Gophers.
