Day 3: Day in Downtown Gresham

One of the benefits of living in Gresham is its charmingly quaint downtown area. Spending the day on Main Street as well as in the surrounding area is a great way to check out the shops and eateries throughout Historic Downtown Gresham. However, the choices can be overwhelming with so many appealing places to explore, so here is just a small list of places to visit when roaming the downtown streets.

Jazzy Bagels

Located right on the corner of Main and Powell, Jazzy Bagels is one of the most well-known breakfast restaurants in Gresham. It first opened its doors in 1999. It specializes in bagels but also serves coffee and ice cream as well as other miscellaneous food items.

“People drive from Portland just to have our bagels,” Jazzy Bagels’ employee Brandy Hull said. “They are baked, not boiled. They’re fluffy and soft, and we make our own cream cheese.”

Jazzy Bagels can be a quick bite for breakfast or brunch, but it can also be a nice place to sit down and chat over coffee with friends. Either way, it is a great place to stop and enjoy some food before going to scout out the rest of downtown Gresham.

Off the Charts Games

Off the Charts Games, a specialty game shop on Second Street off of Main, is one of the newer shops in Downtown Gresham, having opened its doors in August of 2011.

“We’re the only one [game store] doing European board games,” Rob Brown, the owner of Off the Charts Games, said.

It offers many types of games, from puzzles to board games, as well as everything in between. But, that is not all: they also provide tables so that gamers can test out games that sound interesting before they buy them.

“We provide places for people to come in and play,” Brown said.

It is always fun trying out new games, especially when it is cost-free. Who knows,
maybe a game will be found so enjoyable it just has to be added to the family game closet.

Sunny Han'sSunny Han’s Wok and Grill

Sunny Han’s Wok and Grill, now celebrating 20 years of service, is a popular lunch spot in Downtown Gresham. The restaurant is best known for the variety of Asian food it serves. One of the things that makes Sunny Han’s special is the fact that all of the food is fresh.

“We’ve been voted Best Chinese, Best Family [Restaurant] and Best Meal Under Ten Dollars in the Reader’s Choice Awards 2013,” co-owner Judy Han said. “All of the food is fresh, there is no trans fat and no MSG.”

Located on Main and Third Street, Sunny Han’s is different from a typical Chinese restaurant. The setting is calm, and the employees are friendly. There are lights to set the mood and Chinese items, such as bamboo chopsticks, are available for sale.

“The ambiance is different from a typical Chinese restaurant,” Han said.

Sunny Han’s is a great place to stop for lunch. One could stop in and have lunch in under an hour, if desired. It also serves dinner and provides food to-go for those who are on a tight schedule. Not only is there fast and friendly service, but the food is affordable. There are many menu items priced under five dollars.

“[Sunny Han’s] is very affordable,” Han said. “You can come in and have a meal for six bucks if you want.”

With all of these attributes combined, it makes Sunny Han’s the perfect spot for eating lunch.
