Birdy-Fire-WithinFolk singer and songwriter Birdy is a petite teenager who recently put a phenomenal twist on “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver. She makes her second appearance in the music scene with a new album and a haunting voice that captures the ears of those who have their dripping hearts strung on a clothesline.

Birdy, whose real name is Jasmine van den Bogaerde, released her second studio album, Fire Within, in the United Kingdom on Sept. 23. This collection of pieces was drafted by her with the help of a few writers, unlike her cover-filled debut album of 2011.

The album brightens with lines of found love that has not been solidly formed. The complex ideas of the lyrics provides the audience with a look into the true voice of Birdy. These songs also carry with them higher notes and steady guitar strums that generates a beat to stick in the minds of many. This is especially true in the first single off of Fire Within, “Wings.”

“I’m in the foreign state/My thoughts they’ve slipped away/My words are leaving me/They caught an airplane/Because I thought of you/Just for the thought of you,” Birdy proclaims in “Wings.” The sweetness of the song lets the ears of the listener bask in the sunlight of gleaming joy.

The lyrics of a few songs from Fire Within describe saving a relationship that has been burned to a crisp because it was overheated. In “Standing in The Way of The Light”, Birdy sings, “And I’m tired of sitting waiting/Alone in the dark/There’s still a way to make it right/We’ll find the strength this time,” setting a motif of longing for what love used to be.

This song projects heartbreak that teens tend to go through during their high school years. However, in “Standing in The Way of The Light,” the slow and constant minor keys of the piano mixed with her unique, but darkly dreary vocal lets the listener know that she is still hanging around in her musical comfort zone, which she created at 14-years-old. While the tune captures the ears of many with its lyrics, it does not conflict with her previous cover songs due to her tone accenting extreme sadness.

Birdy successfully shows the difficulty of miscommunication through her sorrowful voice hitting at a mezzo-soprano and profound words of emotion throughout the fifth track called “All You Never Say.” When one’s relationship falls because of a lack of words, agony boils in their heart like a knife that pierced it.

As Birdy sings, “All you never say is that you love me, so/All I’ll never know is if you want me, oh,” she cuts a break-up that could be texted in a series of messages into two lines, leaving every word with a purpose. She skillfully fills her tracks with reason rather than silly repetitive lines to compensate for time.

In the end, Fire Within allows the 17-year-old folk singer to triumphantly satisfy the listeners, which consists of people ranging in ages 14 to late 40’s. Her songs evoke a particular sadness while blending in candied pitches to the perfect touch, for which some may call “bittersweet.”
