Strutting onto the court for a game, the volleyball team got ready to fight their way to the top. Yelling “I got it” and “Go, go”, they worked hard to get to State, but fell just a little short when the got knocked out by McMinnville.

This season the players focused on talking and connecting, being that there was a large turnover on the squad from last season.

At senior night on Thursday, Oct.17, there were only two seniors on the team, a high contrast compared to last year when there were seven seniors.

No matter how few seniors they had, they still found great leadership. Senior Alex Frazier had been on the varsity team since her freshman year, as an outside hitter. This year she was a team captain.

“Our leadership is not a problem–I would say sometimes it would be not enough effort and hustle,” Frazier said. “Returners from last year stepped up a lot and so had everyone else. It is different from last year, but we make the best out of the situation.”

Despite the drastic change from the amount of seniors from last year, young leadership was found in a high number of sophomores, including Madison Huff, who plays middle.

“Our leadership comes from me as a sophomore and a senior,” Huff said, “but our leadership is still the same–it is our attitude and experience that is different.”

The problem, as is in a lot of sports, is communication. When they do not talk on the court, the play does not work out in their favor most of the time. Communication is key.

“We have good moments and bad. Sometimes it is because we did not have good communication or we were not focused enough,”  Frazier said.

The girls work hard on the communication, hustling, and working to make the team better. With 13 sophomores versus only two seniors, two juniors and one freshman, the team looked unbalanced, but on the court, they are all equal.

“It may look unbalanced, but it does not feel unbalanced because when we are together we are not grouped by our grade. The whole team is looked at equally no matter what grade they are in. I forget half the time who is a sophomore and who is not,” senior Raena Cabine said.

Cabine, who played outside hitter, cheered on the team, keeping their spirit up during the games. Cabine did not care what grade the team member was in; she always kept them fired up.

Watching the team over the years, the team always seems to work and become a great team no matter how many freshman, sophomores, juniors or seniors there are. The team will be equal in the fact that everyone on the team works hard for how far they want to go.

They won against North Salem on Saturday, Oct. 26, with a score of 3-0. They played McMinnville in Eugene on Wednesday, Oct. 30 and suffered an unfortunate loss 0-3 for the season ender.

Now that this season is over, the students who are planning on coming back are focusing on making next year’s team even stronger than this year.
