Gresham Rhythmettes bring back the gold

The Rhythmettes have pushed to be the best and finally they have reached it.

On Mar. 21-22, the Rhythmettes made their way toward the 2014 OSAA State Dance & Drill Competition in the 6A/5A Large Division. All the hard work and dedication they demonstrated throughout the year was put to the test on those two days. The girls were ready for it, and they came back out being number one in the state.

“When Tigard was called in second [place], everyone started crying [because] we had almost made it. We were so close to being number one, and then the tears started coming down harder when we heard we were number one,” Morse said.

Junior Alyssa Maslen, a three-year veteran for the Rhythmettes and one of the team captains this year, was overjoyed more than ever with the great performance they gave.

“It feels indescribable. We worked so hard, we were undefeated all year and to win is such an honor [that] I can’t explain the feeling,” Maslen said. “I’m just so proud [of] how far along the team has come.”

Sophomore Cassidy Morse is a two-year veteran for the Rhythmettes, and her emotions were running wild. Like her teammate Maslen, she did not know how to explain the feelings that were running through her body when they announced their name as the ultimate winner.

“I was screaming and crying. There was this sense of accomplishment, and we all worked so hard,” Morse said. “It was amazing hearing our song play–announcing we won. It’s just indescribable the feeling you get, I [cannot] explain it well.”

The teammates were not the only ones excited when they heard their name. Head coach Jennifer Wilson was also jumping out of her seat and running to her girls to give them a huge hug.

Wilson could not be prouder of her team.

“This is my twelfth year as a coach, and it’s the best feeling ever winning State. It’s an honor for me,” Wilson said.

The last time the Rhythmettes won State was 1999. They are all proud that this team is going to be the one being remembered because as Wilson stated this group of Rhythmettes were the ones that wanted it the most.

“There [were] longer practices and more dedication. This group [were] the ones that had their goal set in their mind 100% [that] they wanted to win State,” Maslen said.

Wilson knew this group wanted it more than ever, but she did not know if they would make it at first. However, by the end of the fall season, she saw a big chance of bringing home the title.

“I didn’t know at first if we had a chance because we were all still getting to know each other, but by the end of the fall season competing, I felt like we were in the running,” Wilson said.

For all of them, it was the most incredible experience, but for those who have been on the team for a couple years, it is the first year it was nearly indescribable.

Next year The Rhythmettes will have a fresh team ; however, the girls do not mind adding new athletes to the team because they all learn techniques from each other, but this year’s group will be remembered in history.
