This week Nov. 9-13, Oregon goes to college, (college application week) is starting its second year, and many seniors are participating this year.

Oregon Gear Up created a program called Oregon Goes To College three years ago, and this program encourages seniors to apply for college.

Its focus is in helping seniors apply to college with a one-on-one session with adults.

“It’s a great program,” Kendra Maddox, College and Career Coordinator said. “There are many benefits of going, we are actually starting really early, and that’s a good thing because you get to find out earlier if you get accepted and money wise too.”

College application is during each students period, usually lasting for one period, and during that time you get help for applying.

“It’s free,” Maddox said. “Another reason why seniors should take advantage of it, it helps you more than you think.”

Counselors have also been helping students be a part of college application week.

Counselor Susan Fields, has been  helping many seniors apply for application week.

“We’ve had senior meetings,” Fields said. “And during that meeting, we had small groups and talked about it, that’s when they came up and asked to apply.”

Many schools and local community based organizations around the state will be participating.

There will be more than 100 schools attending in Oregon goes to college, and there are 169 seniors who are a part of it this year.

Along with benefits from Maddox, Fields also added some benefits for seniors going to college application week.

“It may be a huge thing for some families,” Fields said. “Some of the seniors applying this year, may be the first in their family to be going to a college after graduating. Application week gets to help them, by breaking it down for them.”

Out of the many seniors attending, senior Jasmine Kleiboeker, is excited to be applying for college.

“I’m just going for it,” Kleiboeker said. “I’m not that nervous, only a little bit, but mainly excited to be going and actually applying to a college that I want to go to.”

Maddox has helped Kleiboeker in many ways, such as getting into this.

“Kendra plans everything for me,” Kleiboeker said. “It’s great, and it really helps.”
