Fashion club begins with big goals

The newest club–and the first of its kind–is designed for students to learn, explore and create fashion, as well as trigger a potential start to a career in the fashion industry. Anyone with an interest for designing, merchandising, styling or shopping in general is welcome to come and join the club.

“Fashion club is a way to express yourself in a way beyond loving fashion and clothes,” senior Cheyenne Connell said, “but [we are] actually creating clothing, with a hint of your own personal style.”

Seniors Meranda Taylor and Kayla Allmaras, along with their advisor Emily Pratt, lead the club.

Allmaras claims that getting involved in Fashion Club could open doors to a potential career in the fashion industry. Anyone who wants to be involved in the fashion business after high school would gain some sort of experience.

“I am really into fashion and plan to have a career in the industry,” Taylor said. “I thought that starting a club would look good and be a good experience to get me started. It is also fun to be around other people who love clothes as well.”

According to Taylor, Fashion Club is also a great way to interact and meet with other people who are also interested in fashion. Taylor started the club because next year she plans on studying merchandising product development.

The club has big goals for the rest of the year. According to Allmaras, the club plans on having a benefit fashion show at the end of this year. Although there is not a specific date set, the club plans on having the fashion show sometime in April.

In order to reach the goal, members of the club have to put in some extra time. Taylor and Allmaras have a lot of planning to do. It will require them to teach other members basic skills to making their own clothes and then using those talents in the show.

“We need to have a few members who have learned to sew,” Taylor said, “and that want to do the design part to make clothes.”

In order for the show to happen, the club will need fundraising or sponsors to provide the supplies needed.

“[There are no fees to join the club], but unless we fundraise, people will have to provide their own fabric if we make clothes,” Allmaras said.

Money is not the only thing Fashion Club will need for the show. Models will also be needed to display the clothing; after all, it is a fashion show. The club plans on having auditions for models to wear the clothing, and they will also need a location to host the show. Students who audition to model do not need to be models or have model experience.

If the club reaches its goal and goes through with the show, the members plan on having all of the money go towards a cause. More specifically, the money will go towards breast cancer. The leaders have not yet decided which organization quite yet.

“The theme [of the show] will be pink,” Taylor said. “All the ticket money would go to the cause.”

The club has a lot to do in order to reach its goal of hosting a fashion show at the end of the year and to keeping the club alive for future students.
